His research interests are centered around the interaction of personality and perceptions of fairness in a person's decision to engage in a variety of workplace behaviors. He also conducts research on the topics of abusive supervision, negotiation effectiveness and employee retention.
His research has been published in a variety of outlets, including the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Learning and Education, Personnel Psychology, Journal of Vocational Behavior, Journal of Business and Psychology and the Journal of Applied Psychology. Burton has been recognized on several occasions for excellence in teaching and research. He has also served as a consultant or seminar leader to a variety of organizations including Boeing and Verizon.
